Luke the Physician

Is there any evidence for the church tradition that Luke the Evangelist was a doctor? This study uses the latest analytical tools to argue that internal clues from Luke and Acts, specifically in terms of vocabulary, can weigh into the discussion.

Name Statistics

Are name popularity statistics a good test of historicity? This is one of several articles that describes how name distribution can be used to gauge the historicity of the Gospels and Acts, co-authored with Jason Wilson, head of the statistics department at Biola University.

The Beloved Eyewitness

The Beloved Disciple is at the center of The Fourth Gospel's claims of eyewitness testimony. But is it possible that the Beloved Disciple was also an eyewitness source for Luke the Evangelist? This article makes the case that he was.

About.

If you are interested in Luke-Acts and its historical value, you've come to the right place. I am a New Testament scholar with an interest in onomastics (the study of names). Much of my research has focused on the nitty-gritty historical details of Luke's text. Here you will find information about my three books and my academic research.

Luuk van de Weghe breaks some new ground. Most important is his meticulous analysis of names, demonstrating that here Luke is in line with serious historians like Plutarch, Suetonius or Josephus.

Video Clips.

In this brief clip from the documentary on The Historical Tell, I discuss how the original spelling of Mary's name can weigh into the question of whether Luke relied on eyewitness testimony. For more on this, see Richard Fellows' discussion here.
Wesley Huff recently discussed my names research on the Joe Rogan Experience (Ep. 2252). Other scholars such as Tal Ilan, Richard Bauckham, Peter Williams, Kamil Gregor, Brian Blais, and my colleague, Jason Wilson, have also made substantial contributions to this topic.
